  Spearmint essential oil, made from the spear-shaped leaves of the spearmint plant, has a long history and many uses. Native to the Mediterranean, spearmint was brought to Britain by the Romans and later to the Americas by English colonists. During the American Revolution, mint teas, including spearmint, were popular because they were not taxed by the English. Spearmint was an important crop in Connecticut during this time.
